London
By Gregg Eppleman • May 5th, 2008 • Category: Destinations, weatherLondon is not only filled with beautiful architecture, and history throughout its confines, but is as famous for its weather as anything, as witnessed by the “London Fog”. As far as weather in London, on the average these are highlights of weather by months.
Warmest Month: July
Coldest Month: January
Wettest Month: January
Driest Month: July
One can always expect some rain, but will often be “disappointed” by the sunshine.
Be prepared for rainy weather (”foggy London town,” as the song goes) no matter what time of year you visit. London is milder than its neighbors in the north, but it can still be cold, damp, and wet in the winter. May and June usually offer the best chance of dry, sunny weather. September and October can be pleasant too, with the added attraction of brilliant autumn colors. High season is June through August, when London is deluged with tourists and accommodations are at a premium. The best times to go are May, September, and October.
There are several major events that take place in London. Shakespeare Under the Stars in Regent’s Park (0171-486-2431) in May. The Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships (0181-946-2244) takes place from June 24 through July 7 at Wimbledon. The Henley Regatta occurs on the Henley-on-Thames, in Oxfordshire, during late June. The Glyndebourne Festival Opera Season in Sussex occurs in late May through August. Epsom Derby Stakes (01372-470047), or “the darby” as it’s known here, runs from June 7 through June 9. Hampton Court Palace Flower Sow in East Molesey, Surrey, takes place in early July. The Notting Hill Carnival (0181-964/0544) is in London during Summer Bank Holiday in late August, usually the last Sunday and Monday. Harrods (0171-730-1234) After-Christmas Sale, Knightsbridge is held in late December.
A typical forecast for the London area for a summer day predicts some scattered clouds with sunny periods as well as showers, possibly heavy at times. No matter what time of year you are visiting London it is best to pack a light raincoat. If you are visiting during the winter months, when the rain is heaviest, you will need a heavy coat and gloves. Also, because London is flat, you will want to foot it through the streets to get a feel for the city and comfortable shoes are a must. Also, many of the smaller streets, especially in neighborhoods like Camden Town, are cobblestone. When exploring, women shouldn’t make the mistake of wearing heels because the rough streets, combined with an afternoon shower, are perfect conditions for a miserable outing and an ankle sprain.
Londoners are besotted with style and cultivate a high sense of fashion. On evenings out, abandon your tourist uniforms of shorts, T-shirts, and trainers (runners) in summer and rough-looking gear in winter and attire yourselves fashionably. Think elegant, chic, and glamorous.
