Cunard Line floated out the latest Queen Elizabeth yesterday with all the fanfare normally reserved for such a milestone event at the luxury cruise line. Special ceremonies were held at Fincantieri’s Monfalcone shipyard near Trieste, Italy, to mark the historic festivity. Cunard’s President and Managing Director, Peter Shanks, was joined by 79-year-old Florence (Dennie) Farmer, whose husband, Willie Farmer, joined Cunard in September 1938 and served as Chief Engineer on both the first Queen Elizabeth and Queen Elizabeth 2 until retirement in October 1979. Her husband has since passed away, and Dennie has sailed with Cunard numerous times, developing close ties with the two previous Queen Elizabeth ships. In recognition of this, Cunard has bestowed Dennie with the honour, in Italian tradition, of being “Madrina” to the third Queen Elizabeth. The remainder of the press release from Cunard is featured here.

Cunard Line is famous for one of a kind events, and 2010 on the line’s newest ship, Queen Victoria, is no exception. In it’s third year in service, the newest Queen will be making her maiden call to San Francisco on 27 January 2010, which makes it her only U.S. inaugural call in the next year. Queen Victoria will stop in the City by the Bay as part of the first segment of her 2010 World Voyage, before continuing across the Pacific Ocean to Hawaii.
The annual Crystal Cruises President’s Cruise, hosted by Crystal President Gregg Michel, once again will be the highlight of 2010 Crystal voyages. Especially interesting this year on the May 12 voyage through the Middle East is a new two-night optional pre-cruise hotel program in Dubai complete with lavish welcome dinner at a Bedouin camp in the desert dunes and traditional Arab music, henna artists and belly dancers. Check out the list of notables.
Princess Cruises has come up with a unique new concept that will enable millions of folks to witness a ship christening of the Ocean Princess (formerly Tahitian Princess). They are also breaking tradition by extending an open invitation to anyone wishing to become an honorary godparent for the vessel, with the first-ever virtual christening. In a new twist on the time-honored tradition, the naming ceremony will occur completely online, at http://www.princess.com/oceanvirtualchristening. Each new godparent will trigger a $1 donation from Princess to the New England Aquarium, a global leader in ocean exploration and marine conservation, up to $25,000.
